This book is well written and very thought provoking. He doesn't go into the Owl or Minerva (or its connection to Virgo)...but I do. Somewhere I have a half written article on this. I'll try and find it and finish it as a blog.

The most salient aspect of the Bohemian Grove (aside from the Fascist networking) is their odd fascination with the Owl. In every matter concerning the Bohemian Club of San Francisco our nocturnal friend is ubiquitous. Members adorn their houses with shrines devoted to the raptor while proudly sporting neckties and cufflinks bearing their chosen talisman. To the casual observer this appears to be nothing more then a common fetish, eccentricity, or foible. However behind this seemingly innocuous totem is a hidden arcane mystery.

This mystery floats closest to the surface during the Bohemian Clubs annual kickoff to their summer retreat on July 15th. As the sunsets the members engage in a bizarre ritual entitled the “Cremation of Care”. This ritual is ostensibly meant to cast away the dull cares of the world through the means of an elaborate pageant reminiscent of ceremonial magic.

The ritual (performed in front of approximately 2000 member parish) consists of a solemn procession of robed adepts to the foot of a 45 foot stone statue in the form of a giant owl, which the idolaters praise as Moloch. At the foot of this owl is a bonfire (etymologically: Bone Fire) which awaits the ritual sacrifice and an eternal flame (favored symbol of the mysteries). The owl faces a small man made lake or reflecting pool over which the intended sacrificial victim is conveyed over by an archetypal ferryman patterned after the Greek god Charon who transports the dead over the river Styx, gateway to Hades. Wrapped up in a bundle reminiscent of mummification the “effigy” of “Dull Care” is carried to its annual funeral pyre.

The high priest exclaims:

“Bohemians and Preists! The desperate call of heavy hearts is answered! By the power of your fellowship, Dull Care is slain! His Body has been brought yonder to our funeral pyre to the joyous pipings of a funeral march. Our funeral pyre awaits the corpse of care!” (Hanson 2004, p.78)

It is apparent that Charon is not ferrying care to Hades but in fact out of Hades where he is met by the Bohemians who return him to Hell, fouling yet another escape attempt. Dull Care protests: “Fools, Fools, Fools, When will ye learn that me ye cannot slay? Year after year, ye burn me in this Grove, lifting your puny shouts of triumph to the stars. When again ye turn your faces to the marketplace –do you not find me waiting, as of old?” (Hanson 2004, p.78)

It is apparent that in this ritual that the Bohemians are attempting to sacrifice care or empathy for their fellow humans as they engage in the dog eat dog world of international finance and globalization. The worshippers recognize that slaying care is a goal unattainable to only the most accomplished Babylonians. And thus they decry: We shall meet thee and fight thee as of old… and some of us will prevail against thee. And some Thou shalt destroy. But this too we know: year after year, within this happy Grove, our fellowship bans Thee for a space. Thine malevolence which would pursue us here has lostits power under these friendly trees. So shall we burn Thee once again this night? And with the flames that eat thine effigy, we shall read the sign: Midsummer sets us free!”

With this the Priests attempt to light the fire which is doused by the magic of Care. The Bohemians are thus required to seek help from their Owl God, to which they chant and sing a song in obeisance to. In some ceremonies fire Shoots from the sky to light the Bone Fire where usually the fire is taken from the eternal flame and the pyre finally lights. Care shrieks an ear piercingly realistic death gasp as the crowd erupts in jubilation. And Thus are the leaders of the world spiritually satisfied for another year.

In Greek terms Dull Care most likely represents Elpis the personification of hope and/or Eleos the goddess of pity, and mercy. As Aesops fables recounts:

"Zeus gathered all the useful things together in a jar and put a lid on it. He then left the jar in the keeping of mankind. But man had no self-control: he wanted to know what was in that jar and so he pushed the lid aside, letting all those things go back to the abode of the gods. The good things flew away, soaring high above the earth, and Elpis (Hope) was the only thing left; when the lid was put back on the jar, Elpis (Hope) was kept inside. That is why Elpis (Hope) alone still dwells among men, promising that she will bestow on each of us the good things that have gone away." -Aesops Fables 58 (from Babrius) (Theoi.com).

Thus the attempt to cremate care annually is an attempt to quash the last remnant of good left in humanity and to kill our hope. In contemporary Piscean terms the God of empathy would be Christ as God sent his son to empathize with humanity. In essence this ceremony could be the constraining of a return of his compassion to the world.

The tie in would have been Minerva Capotoline hill in Rome, Capitol Hill in the US and Moloch. a disambiguation would have been necessary between Minerva and Virgo....Virgo being a hermaphrodite makes it all the more interesting.
